WHY IT MATTERS
A Qualified Firearms Appraisal Supports Your Charitable Contribution Deduction
When you donate firearms to a museum, historical society, or other qualified charitable organization, the IRS requires a qualified appraisal to substantiate the fair market value you claim as a deduction. Firearms Appraisers prepares independent, USPAP-compliant valuations that give donors the documentation needed for IRS Form 8283 and the charitable contribution deduction.
For any noncash donation valued above $5,000, the IRS requires a qualified appraisal prepared by a qualified appraiser, and the completed appraisal summary must be attached to your return on Form 8283. Our appraisers research make, model, condition, provenance, and rarity, then document recent market comparables so the reported value rests on defensible evidence.
We prepare each report to meet IRS requirements for noncash charitable contributions, including the timing rules that govern when the appraisal must be completed, so donors, CPAs, and attorneys can file the deduction with a professional foundation behind every figure.

DONATION QUESTIONS
Questions About Donating Firearms to a Qualified Charity
Do I need an appraisal to deduct a donated firearm?
If you donate one or more firearms and claim a deduction of more than $5,000, the IRS requires a qualified appraisal to substantiate the fair market value. For smaller gifts, an appraisal is often still the clearest way to document the value you report.
What is IRS Form 8283 and how does the appraisal fit in?
Form 8283 is the IRS form for reporting noncash charitable contributions. For donations over $5,000, Section B must be completed, the qualified appraiser signs the appraiser declaration, and the receiving charity acknowledges the gift. Our appraisal provides the valuation and the signed declaration your return needs.
What counts as a qualified appraisal and a qualified appraiser?
A qualified appraisal is a document prepared in accordance with IRS requirements by a qualified appraiser who holds recognized credentials and regularly appraises the type of property involved. Our firearms appraisers meet these standards and prepare every report in accordance with USPAP.
When does the appraisal need to be completed?
The IRS requires that a qualified appraisal be made no earlier than 60 days before the date of the donation and received before the due date, including extensions, of the return on which you claim the deduction. Tell us your filing deadline and we will confirm timing up front.
How long does a donation firearms appraisal take?
Single firearms and small lots are typically completed in 7 to 10 business days, often within a week. Larger collections generally take three to four weeks. Expedited service is available, and we confirm timing once we understand the size of the donation and your filing deadline.
